When we say 'Professional', society has trained us to think about careers in medicine, law, accountancy or engineering... (You know, people with a lot of random letters on their business cards.)Well... today I'm telling you that entrepreneurs can — and must — be Professionals too.Problem is: not enough of them are. When I became a Professional, after a decade of work on my business — with literally thousands of painful mistakes and rejections — my life changed completely. For example, I stopped worrying about things I couldn’t control, like:If the economy was growing (or not growing)What the government was doing (or not doing)Where my customers might be getting a cheaper dealNasty things that rival business owners may have been saying about my brandAll these things that used to keep me up at night… just went away. Why? Because I became a Professional..Here are ten ways that professional entrepreneurs win in their businesses. 1. They take ownership“I stand up. I show up. I’m accountable. I am the MD of my own desk.” 2. They stick to the basics“I do what I should, when I should. I know that actions speak much louder than words. By my actions you will know me.” 3. They understand their motivations“I know where I want to go in life, and I know what I need to do to get there. I know why this work matters, and I know who suffers if I don’t follow through.” 4. They play the long game“I refuse to engage in short-term, narrow-minded games that are sadly so common in Botswana. I keep my customers because I keep my promises.” 5. They are target-driven“My targets are SMART: (1) Specific, (2) Measurable, (3) Attainable, (4) Realistic and (5) Time-bound. Targets are almost everything to me. I say almost because I will never cut corners or conceal the truth from a customer in the name of reaching my target.” 6. They bring a great attitude to every situation“It’s easy to have a great attitude when everything is going my way. But my attitude is great even when my car breaks down (or) deals fall through unexpectedly (or) people let me down. My attitude is like a price tag — it shows how valuable I am.” 7. They're genuinely helpful“My clients are genuinely better off because I exist. I make life easier for them, I solve problems for them, I help them achieve goals that were previously out of reach. I know I’m he best person to help this customer.” 8. They have high emotional intelligence“I see the world through my customer’s eyes. I let the customer be the centre of my attention. I never put myself ahead of my customers.” 9. They bounce back after rejection“Rejection has been my greatest teacher. I understand that business can be tough — but I also know that a YES is always just around the corner, and so is a potentially life-changing deal. That’s why I take rejection seriously, but I never take it personally.” 10. They practice self-improvement“I’m careful about what I feed myself mentally. I understand what it means to invest in myself. I know people who say they want success — but they don't want to do the work. I am not one of those people.” Can you think of any other ways in which Professional entrepreneurs win in their businesses?
