The end of an era; the last of a dying breed. This is the beginning of the endgame. I am talking about the combustion engine. It has served us for + 144 years and it is pretty sad to watch it live out its last days..Soon, we will be saying our goodbyes to naturally aspirated screams, the wooshes and whines from spooling turbos and the thrill from hearing the acoustics of a high-powered engine climbing up the rev-range as it smashes through 6 to 7, or even eight gears. The smell of oil, fresh petrol and burning rubber from doing 11s down a long stretch of tarmac are all the great things that will shortly be a thing of the past..All this to be replaced by a simple current. Electricity. Batteries. EV power or battery assistance is the new source for getting you from point A to point B, and I simply hate all of it. We all do. When I say we, I am speaking for the grease monkeys, car enthusiasts and purists who have petrol pumping through their veins..Now, there is a general consensus that this is only for the betterment of our future. An understanding of how the Internal Combustion Engine (ICE) has brought about more harm than it has any good. With all the land pollution, noise pollution and more importantly, air pollution these engines have brought about, it was inevitable that the world will do away with this type of engine. The problem we have with this new and upcoming technology is the sheer lack in human emotion, theatre and drama EV-powered and battery-assisted engines bring to the table..There is a disconnect between man and machine, the driver and the car, the vibrations to the steering wheel from the torque that turns the tyres rapidly. It is gone. That analogue and manual feel is being swapped out for a digital and artificial link. A link that comes off as forced. The motoring experience will never be the same. And us grease monkeys don’t have a choice but to live with it for the good of the world’s environment..Of course, we have a genuine concern and care for the world and the state it is left in. We want to aim for the rectification of the planet and the environment we live in. Unfortunately for the petrol heads, the solution to these environmental problems results in settling for dull, numbing and soulless experiences on the racetrack, during road trips on the autobahn and on the way back home between canyon roads, hitting the hairpins and corkscrews with the fear of rolling down the hill. .The ICE is an art in the form of mechanical engineering, an escape for many that provides a rush, gives you butterflies and gets your adrenaline going at the turn of a key. This kind of connection and emotion may never be felt again with the new direction we are taking in the motoring world. .And for these reasons, the Internal combustion engine will forever be cherished for how much it has done for us petrol heads. Long live ICE.
