Let’s ignore that he is a Toy Pomeranian and therefore maybe a little more akin to a cat or a really large gerbil. He’s a certified canine at 1.5kg, albeit predominantly comprised of fluff.

And let me tell you, this puppy has changed everything. It’s not just about our daily routine change-up (crucial), or the fact that we are now people who arrange puppy play dates (we do), but it’s about the very fact that my mindset and my mood are notably better, my stress levels are significantly down, and my desire for fresh air during neighbourhood walks has infinitely increased.

It was, if I am being honest, part of a deliberate stress-less plan at the end of December 2022. We picked a breed known for being super sensitive, supper affectionate and super needy.

And then science did its thing and made the case for me.

Puppies are proven anti-stress-happiness-engineers. A Dog Parent Study conducted by BarkBox showed that 71% of dog parents believe their dogs have made them happier. 80% find it easier to get up in the morning because their dogs greet them, and 93% feel they are better people overall because of their dogs. Spending time with an animal is proven to increase the level of the hormone oxytocin - often referred to as the “love hormone” - in your body. This is the same neurotransmitter that increases trust and reduces fear.

The world over, pups are fast being turned to for the myriad of physiological and emotional benefits they bring, even inspiring greater productivity and focus. Puppy therapy (mental health focussed, wellbeing company, led by puppies), puppy yoga, puppies being brought into schools pre-exams and even office puppies are now increasingly popular.

Science and precedent? Yes!

It shouldn’t be surprising really, that showing love and affection for someone else can have a cathartic effect. This was expected. But oh my god, that tail-wagging, sideways-prancing ball of fluffing jumping with joy when he hears the sound of your heels at the door is a different kind of drug.

I am officially among the puppy converted. And unashamedly smitten.

Now, how to convince my boss we should have a “Bring your puppy to work” day….?
